Defence system with artificial intelligence

Artificial intelligence in the defence sector.

World is in a great dilemma, with the rise of artificial intelligence especially artificial intelligence in the defence sectorTechnology advancement always bringing benefits to our society but few advancements of this may put society in risk. One side, it is bringing more benefits to society through the internet, social media online transactions etc. simultaneously putting society in risk of losing personal data through rising cyberattack, cybercrime etc.

Indian Army mobilising to Indo China border

As per recent increasing India China border conflict, it was reported that India’s major establishments and important departments are in the target of cyberattacks from China. These attacks can not only leak the important information of India, but can also stop the essential work of all the sectors of India. Cyberwarfare is a new warfare which more dangerous than a missile attack.

AI  is another advancement, which can bring many benefits to the society, but there is also, the great risk involved in it including ethical issues and obliterations.

So, What is AI?

This is an imaginary machine capable of doing all the intelligent tasks performed by humans. Refer to the article  "ArtificialGeneral Intelligence & Artificial Narrow Intelligence - What Does It Mean?"

What are the benefits of  AI in the defence sector?

What SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has expressed that this is more dangerous than nuclear warheads or missiles. Two nuclear power country Russia and China doing race between them. As Vladimir Putin, that the country that leads in this new platform which will be ruler of the world. China has a target to be the world leader in AI by 2030.

Revolution in defence sector since 1st World War :

In earlier days mostly horses were used in the war. We know especially dog is still used by modern military and police among other animals. It was in history when animals, mammals, birds, also used in war in earlier days. But now in modern days war mostly driven by technology, due achievement and efficiency.  Every revolution having its uniqueness and unruly nature.

Initially, at the time of first world war ( WWI ), the revolution started with gun powder and the use of guns like Rifles, Machine guns, which had a continuous fire of 450–600 rounds per minute. There was some rumour that the machine gun would completely replace the rifle, but its found that machine guns were not the most lethal weapon of that great War.  Battled tank were developed, WAR plane also developed and used by the military units.

World War I Arms

In (WWII) the second revolution experienced. Nuclear Bomb was used in the 2nd world war(WWII). It was much more powerful warfare which caused massive destruction as because that was targeted on the city and the entire city was affected. In world war II, jet engine, ballistic missiles and submarine, nuclear warheads were developed during this period.

Next or 3rd revolution includes the use of drones, Unmanned Arial vehicles ( UAV ). Electronics warfare techniques are becoming more intelligent, effective, and accurate in many ways. Advancing in AI technology leading to lethal autonomous weapon ( LAWs), which robots can independently search and engage targets without human intervention. Using artificial intelligence in air defence, truly replace solders in warfare, as many AI-based LAWs getting developed worldwide, it may be the third revolution in warfare.

With the rising of the computer system,  there is a threat of cyber warfare and autonomous weapons. Recently we witnessed the cyber warfare from Chines cyber army. As we are living in a intermate connected world and intermate based equipment are getting used in defence departments, which is vulnerable to cyber-attacks.

Cyber attacks can damage major critical national infrastructure like power distribution process, transportation, information hubs, telecoms etc. to prevent cyberattacks, cybersecurity process require more strong, quick and effective decision-making plan. Militaries around the world are upgrading their nuclear weapons with greater automation and connectivity.

Upgradation of digital technology and connectivity are essential in today's defence strategies. For deploying a submarine nuclear warhead deployed in the ocean depends on different computer system like nuclear propulsion plant, navigation, freshwater, etc. which is including the requirement of different computer systems, including codes etc which controlled by human expertise. That means those can be theft, hacked.

AI in the defence sector and security,  a significant role in warfare:

Artificial intelligence used in military applications including defensive, offensive and information warfare which is increasing day by day. One defensive system LAWs can automatically identify and attack on targeted missiles, rockets, artillery, aircraft and surface vessels as per the program set by the human operator. Many latest missiles systems having autonomous targeting capability. Its can fire the target automatically without any human intervention. However AI system could be hacked by terrorist and triggered the deadly weapon cause massive damage.

These AI-based LAWs can be very scary, if it goes wrong and loss controls then it can make unexpected damage, also this ai system can be hacked by an enemy nation or terrorist.

Artificial intelligence  in the defence sector and robotics may play a significant role in many defence applications –
  • Robots controlled by AI can go through dangerous areas, perform remote operations with surveillance.
  • Interpretation of the image for identification and classification.
  • Can the diagnosis and maintenance of advance weapon system like radar and missiles.
  • Controlled Drone, or an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), usually carry aircraft’s weapon like missiles, which used for DRONE attack.
  • Using for diagnosis and maintenance of advanced weapon systems like radar and missiles and many other uses.
The defence industry gradually shifting towards the integration of artificial intelligence with robots for military applications.

Rise of the real destroyer  :

We have seen the uses of AI system in defence sector capabilities and applications on earth, but what about deployment of AI  in air space and ocean?  in air defence, it is more profound, devasting and can cause massive damage to attacking city, country.

In earlier war history or in the movie we have seen that, people go underground tunnel for their safety when airstrike happens. but in AI-assisted Airstrike you can not hide yourself, even you go underground, ai in air defence system is more smarter and it can easily find you. Presently many countries already developed this type of weapons such as aircraft, hypersonic missiles, submarines, and drones. Russia, US, Israel, India are widely recognised countries who developed such unmanned combat aerial vehicle ( UCAV ) system and continuous improvement going on. Few countries like China, Pakistan etc..also having such defence systems.

AI is developed and utilised to achieve a higher degree of self-control when it's using as an offensive device, like drone can automatically search, locate and identify the target. Drone can also protect itself if its find any against enemy aircraft.

U.S. Air Force announced about a new AI program that it’s calling “Skyborg,” which can autonomously fly drones and fighter jets.

As per defence world.net – “ India’s Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) is developing a swarm drone system dubbed “Alpha-S,” designed to be launched from fighter aircraft, and a stealthy Artificial Intelligence (AI)- enabled robot wingman. The new robot wingman is an unmanned aircraft half the size of a regular fighter and armed with stealth features. Armed with AI, the drone is designed to fly nearly a 100km ahead of a conventional fighter to engage enemy threats, the report said.

The Indian government has also initiated the process in India and the system to fight against AI-based autonomous machine attacks. Next revolution may be war from space as the US government already announced that they have their space force ready to war from space.

Conclusion: AI has become very essential elements for defence program globally. Many countries are working on AI to take part in the AI arms race to develop AI-based weaponry. LAWs may be the weapon of future terror and destruction. Countries are developing cyber army with cyber warfare capabilities to defend the cyber attack and save the nation.
